I want to thank each and every one of you who sent me such wonderful birthday wishes. I do so appreciate your dropping by my little blog to say "hi".
As life changes, we must learn to go with the flow. Some of you may know I live on an island. We take a car ferry to and from the mainland. In the last couple of years, the ferry rates have increased at an alarming rate, and now we will have 2 more rate hikes this year. My husband and I have been talking about moving from here for some time. It would be more convenient for us to be on the other side of the river, closer to our daughter. My husband is not in the best of health either, and we're far from a hospital. It takes an enormous amount of time to ferry back and forth, not to mention the ridiculous rates they are now charging. This last episode was just enough to give us the push we need to get our behinds in action.
So. Our home is for sale and we are looking for another. This has been a very hard decision for us to make after living here 28 years and loving this home that we built. But, it is time. We want to make this move while we still have each other. Certainly, we don't want to wait until one of us is alone and have to tackle this enormous task by ourselves. I've started the agonizing process of cleaning out closets and tossing and taking things to the Salvation Army. Any of you who have done this knows what a PITA it is. I won't be sewing much for a while, although I hope to keep up with my Designer group challenges. But until I get things in the house sorted out and more manageable, I can't spend much time at the machine.
But--I will still be reading and commenting on your blogs. I will sew vicariously through you until I get things in order. I may even pop in my blog now and then and put up some photos of our mess, if only for my own diary. I will be back. Someday.

42 Talk to me:
Best of luck to you and your husband, Gwen! Please do keep in touch and post when life settles down a bit!
Good luck on your upcoming changes. Hubby and I are anticipating a move in the near future as well. Really makes you take a good hard look at your stuff!
Take care of yourself as you take on this new adventure. I know what a beautiful place the island is, but there are many more around the water. Hope you find a wonderful new home.
You and your husband will be in my thoughts while you make this transition. I'm sure that you will find a place to create in your new living quarters and I'll await your return to this your virtual home.
Lots of luck for selling your home and finding a new home of your dreams. I'm sure that once you return to the blog you'll be exploding with inspiration. I can't wait:)
Good luck with this huge endeavor! It is amazing what we accrue and what we really do not need. I hope your house sells quickly and that you find another happy home for the two of you ;-)
I understand completely. We lived in the country for years. When we retired, we opted for small town life with hospitals and medical services within 10 miles. There really are times when a life style change is needed. I'll be thinking of you. Good luck!
Thinking of you, during this time! My hubby and I owner-built our home in 1991 - and we are still here 22 years later. 22 years of accumulated collections of life that have never had to be packed away! So I totally understand the inner turmoil you must be going through. But both of us know that emotions must not rule life's needs - you are extremely wise to be making the move now, together supporting each other...J
All the best for your move and for your husband's health! The "Threads" issue with your jacket just came to Germany, and I'm floored by the excellence of your contribution - you should be a regular contributer there!
Best wishes for your move.
All the best for the move.
Having just moved 2 weeks ago, I understand how it can be. We haven't lived in any one place for more than 3 years, though, so I'd imagine you have a whole lot more to go through. I hope it all goes smoothly for you and that you find a wonderful new home!
The move will be a lot of work, but it is also exciting. A new adventure! I think you are sensible to make the move now for all the reasons you explained. I'll look forward to you sewing again, "when the dust settles."
Gwen I wish your the best with your move. I hope you find the perfect house with the perfect sewing room too.
Gwen, I don't envy you at all, but I do wish you well and hope the packing and move are not overwhelmingly stressful. I joked with my DH when we moved into this house we built almost 30 years ago and said, "from here it's either the nursing home or the funeral home - moving is not my thing."
Good luck to you both. My in laws lived far from the nearest hospital when my fil's health began to fail. They too, felt the need to move closer to everything, not only the hospital. It's not easy to give up a home you've lived in for so long.
Good luck, Gwen! While I'm sure this is *very* difficult, it sounds like you are making this decision from a strong position. I think I missed your birthday post, so happy belated birthday!!
I to wish you the best on due cluttering, selling your house and moving. It is a lot of hard work! Wished I lived close by to help you and have some good laughs while doing it.
Please report in and let us know how things are going. We need to know how you are doing.
Hugs to you
A move from a place so loved can certainly be challenging, but here's to finding a new home that feeds you in different, and even more rewarding ways!
I look forward to hearing more news from you soon - may many blessings go with you :)
Good luck to you Gwen with the packing, house selling and buying and the move. It will be a big undertaking but I know you will do an amazing job.
Good luck, Gwen! Whenever we are feeling overwhelmed, we always tell each other, "It's an adventure!" I hope you find a perfect place on the mainland!
Oh, Gwen, I so understand the difficulty and turmoil of a decision like this. I wish you some momnts of peace and happiness in the midst of the rushing and cleaning, etc. I was just reading a wonderful gardening blog that reminded me that things do take a natural time and don't happen just because I am rushing and pushng. it's good you are doing this now while the choice is yours. Sending you good thoughts.
Best of luck with the selling and buying and clearing and moving. I hope you find a beautiful new home.
Good luck on the sorting, packing and moving. We are doing the same for many of the same reasons: DH's poor health, being nearer to the grandkids. I am excited to be doing this, but it sure not a fun process. Best of luck to you.
Happy belated birthday! Wish you success in selling your home and hope all goes well with that. Will look forward to seeing you post again on your blog in the future.
Oh, Gwen, I'll miss you and will be thinking of you and your husband as you make this change. And I'll look forward to seeing you reappear! Take care, best, Coco
All the best for your move!!
Happy belated birthday. I hope all goes well with the move and hope to see you back here soon.
Good luck with all the purging and packing! You can do it!! And have I ever thanked you for all your comments on my blog over the years? I think you are my number 1 commenter & sewing cheerleader! You're awesome!
Wishing you and your husband the best of luck for this big change!
That is a big step but sounds like you have thought it out. Good luck with all the process and hope you are back to sewing soon.
I know your pain - I've been helping my mom pack her stuff for the past month to move into a smaller patio home with her husband, and every day she STILL finds stuff to give me. Good luck with your move and keep us updated when you get a chance!
Thanks for commenting on my blog Gwen. Your move sure sounds like a lot of work but I hope you find some fun surprises while you're sorting and packing, and that you find a new home both you and your husband love as much as your current home.
Best of luck Gwen!
I'm sure it was a difficult decision to make after 28 years in your home, but being closer to your daughter will be wonderful. Good luck with the move process!
Oh Gwen! I feel your pain. We will be in the same spot one of these years. Good luck with everything. I hope you will find a lovely place to live nearer your children.
Oh dear, I do not envy you the move. But so smart to do it while you have each other. I'm sure when it's over you'll be much relieved not to need to rely on the ferry in case of an emergency.
Moving is such a hard thing to do. The first 4 years in Maui we moved 3 times! Thankfully, we are settled now, and soon you will be too. It's good to hear you will be closer to your daughter and have the necessary things in life closer as well. I hope you can take your time and not rush, and I hope you have plenty of help. Looking forward to hearing from you again. Hang in there!
Funny isn't it, when you are first married and move into the home you built together (in my case both husband and father built it) you think you will stay there for ever. But as age creeps on you (I'm 67), you suddenly realise that the lovely big house with the lovely big garden is going to become a bit of a nuisance when something happens to one of you. It is something I never envisaged happening but on certain days I feel it might happen and I hope like you I will embrace the change and move.
Good luck in your move, I think it is a good decision given the circumstances. Just make sure you have a decent sewing room.
