T-Shirt Time

We are home from the hospital, and celebrating the rest of the holiday weekend very quietly. Thank you for all your good wishes. DH is doing well right now.

Here's my latest sewing project- dark denim jeans, and a T-shirt. Every spring, I make Tshirts. That's what I live in all summer, and by the end of the season, they usually look worn and need replacing. The cotton knit of this T was free from the grab table at one of my sewing clubs. I see my face is all scrunched up from looking into the sun. Great!

The pattern I use is an old Stretch and Sew pattern, circa 1978. I've restyled it over and over again. I scooped out the neckline on this one and bound it. I made two others, and have fabric for more.
I've searched for cotton knits, and found these at http://www.thefabricfairy.com/ There are 500+ cotton and cotton/lycra knit fabrics on that site. Very quick service. These arrived 3 days after ordering. They are very good quality-not thin and wimpy. These washed beautifully and held their shape. . The company included a nice note with a discount toward the next purchase. I'm very pleased with Fabric Fairy and will order from them again.

Jersey has a pesky habit of curling at the edges. To control that--I cut out the pieces, and with them doubled and laying flat, I spray-starch the edges. With an iron, I press them dry. It's worth the effort. No more curling! Just be cautious and use an up and down motion with the iron so the fabric doesn't get distorted when pressing. It would be a quicker task using a clam-press.

Today, I'm going to cut T-shirts and probably sew at least one of them. I have white denim, washed and ready to cut out jeans. And, I found dark brown bull denim at Jo's for jeans. After doing a bit of really simple sewing, I'm going to be eager to make something more challenging and creative for my exciting trips to hospitals and running errands!

Have a great holiday!

Hello Gwen!
Glad to hear Hubby is doing well right now... "Take time to take care of Gwen, too, eh!!" Your sewing plans sound like a good way to do that ;)

What a relief for you that DH is doing well. Sewing will make you feel better. Actually your sewing plan sounds a lot like mine. Aren't TNT patterns priceless? I always have to make new ones every spring as well.

Thanks for the tip about the curling knits. One reason I don't sew many knits is they seem to have a mind of their own. I'll be sure to use the tip.

Great news about your DH!

Love the new top. Fabric Fairy is one of my new favs too.

I have a question about your glasses ... who/what are they? And do you think they'd work for progressive lenses? I am in big need of new specs and I love yours. When you get a chance, you can either drop an answer on my blog or email me at djc at cedesign.com. No hurry, no pressure. :-)

Good news about DH! Hope he continues to improve. The T is so pretty. Those colors are so happy and summery! I've never purchased from the fabric fairy, but I'm going to have to pay them a virtual visit!

It's funny, I have this same pattern in my stash of them, but I never made it. I may have to since yours is cute.

I am so glad to hear your husband is better and out of the hospital environment. I've only had two sewing experiences with knits but the curling is a negative for me. Thanks for the tip it makes perfect sense.
Btw, if I had that stunning view I would be sewing outside!!!!

I'm so glad to hear the your DH is doing better. I've had both him and you in my prayers.
I love those dark jeans and that pretty colorful tshirt. Thanks for the tip on getting rid of the curling on jerseys. You are such a great seamstress. I love your hair!!!

Looks like you're having a sewing marathon of your own! Your tip for curling fabric is wonderful and I will use it this very weekend. I usually try not to cut jersey until just before I sew it. The paisley skirt I made is the same fabric as the jacket you made recently. It's a wonderful fabric to wear and after a 12 hour day yesterday my skirt wasn't creased! The orange wrap top does go with it, but I made is specifically to go with a pair of pants that are next up on my list. It was a happy coincidence. Glad to hear DH is on the mend. Take care.

I'm glad you are able to be at home for some of the weekend. Your T-shirt looks great, especially the bound neckline. Thank you also for the tip about the curling edges and the Fabric Fairy recommendation. I haven't done a lot of sewing with jersey, mostly because I haven't found good quality fabrics --- I'm looking forward to trying these! Take care!

Fearless is a wonderful quality to have. It means you are a strong woman who knows what she wants and is happy. It means that you can face whatever life has to throw at you and still be the loving, sweet, wonderful lady that you are. I am proud to claim a fearless woman as my friend!

Glad your husband is doing well! Your jeans/t-shirt look great. And thanks for the comment on the jeans. I'm going to leave these as is because they're still better than most of what I own, but I'm thinking once I get through the rest of my summer sewing I might make another partial muslin to try to resolve those fitting issues in the waist and hips and then re-draw the pattern. So I'll definitely keep that in mind about the crotch.

Gwen, do you use fusible knit on the neckline or hems of your T-shirts to stabalize them? Have a wonderful weekend!
